With works spanning the four lower levels on the nine-storey building, the existing mall received an entirely new fitout, a new façade and modern dining terrace.
Businesses remained open for business throughout the install meaning that our installers and glaziers completed majority of their work at night.
Aluco's biggest undertaking in this extensive project was the external four-storey high custom window system which would serve as the new resting place for one of South Australia's most striking sculptures. A non negotiable feature for the client was for the birds in the sculpture to appear to be "coming out of the glass" and multiple trades worked to make this happen but the install wasn't without it's drama.
Our installers and glaziers worked from a boom lift to first install framing and then the 300+ kilo laminated glass panels on the façade. The scultpure was then craned in and installation was attempted, beginning first with the top floating bird. This single bird weighed over 40 kilos and was to be attached to a structural steel beam but would also sit directly on one of the glass panels. During the install, one of the massive glass panel was cracked.
Aluco worked with an external engineer for removal of the panel and then invited the builder, architect and engineer to our factory in Edwardstown to test out an idea. We performed strength tests in our factory using Soudals T-Rex Sealant product with the idea of permenantly adhering the 40 kilo bird directly to the glass panel. The test was approved by the engineer and the bird along with the rest of the sculpture sits above the glass canopy, a striking landmark that shows nothing of the installation hassle.
Another unique feature Aluco worked on was the mirror under the escalators. This was a custom casette system designed by Aluco that was pre-glazed in our factory in Edwardstown.
